I have loving cousins who live in New Orleans. They, like everyone else, had to evacuate their home and city during Hurricane Katrina. Fortunately for them, we have family in Atlanta, so that's where they went. Together with Rochelle and Bobby, there is high-school junior Justin, and my elderly Aunt Lil whose is in her 90s. Rochelle, Bobby and Justin moved to a residence hotel and Aunt Lil moved to a senior citizen residence. Last night I spoke to Rochelle who told me they were returning to New Orleans this week. Aunt Lil would be remaining behind in Atlanta.

Wow, I thought, is this a good decision or not? First, to move back to New Orleans means to move back to a city which is still not fully functioning as it needs to in order to support those who live there. Will there be enough government services? Police? Fire? School teachers? It turns out that the main reason they are moving back is so that Justin can resume his classes with his friends. After all, they have been in school together for eleven years, and he wants to be back with them in comfortable, safe and familiar surroundings.

The neighborhood where they live is on higher ground, so the damage is minimal. But they will be moving back home to a city with still has lots of problems. There is no downtown. The city is in shambles, it hardly looks or even sounds like the New Orleans they once knew and loved. Power is still off in many neighborhoods, and hospitals are not yet fully staffed. The question can honestly be asked: what kind of future awaits them? Why move back at all? Maybe staying in Atlanta is a better way to go.

On the other hand, I suspect that most of those who left New Orleans will by now be experiencing what I will call "a second disconnect." First, their city was destroyed and no one came to help them, so they had to leave. That was the first disconnect. By now, they are feeling like strangers in communities not their own, surrounded by caring and loving people who have reached out to help, but who by now are probably feeling something like, "okay, it's been nice to have you for a while, we're glad we could help you out when you needed us, but now please leave us alone so we can get back to our former normal lives."

This is a natural and normal feeling on the part of those who took New Orleaneans into their homes and schools and factories and communities. Here comes another disconnect, where again there is a feeling of being an alien in a strange land. So I can well understand Rochelle saying that they want to return home. Their home is their haven, and they miss it terribly. By the way, Aunt Lil is doing great in the Jewish Home in Atlanta--who would have thought? She has neighbors, staff to take care of her, food she likes, nearby relatives too come and visit, and so she's very happy. I'm sure this made Rochelle's decision much easier.

What is the right answer? I have no idea. I feel sad for my cousins and their friends who return, they are living in the middle of a dilemma with no solid solution. On the other hand, I guess that's what hope is--in the midst of ambiguity, the courage to move forward and to make a conscious decision that no matter what, there is a bright future to look forward to. And that is how she sounded last night on the phone. Good luck, my cousins, and good luck to all those who are coming home. May the New Year 2006 bring you all a renewed sense of belonging and safety and serenity and community. And most of all, peace.

Summer walleye, this is the time for the most popular game fish in Canada. Tens of thousands of anglers consider this their favourite fish to catch for the sport and mostly for the fact that it is one of the greatest fish to eat.

This tip comes from an experience while fishing walleye in Northern Ontario, on Manitoulin Island, in went out early in the morning hoping to pick up a few walleye early.

I headed for a shoal that I fish frequently; it is about 20 to 25 feet of water, and drops off to about 70 feet deep. After about and hour or so, I had 2 small walleyes to show for my effort. Guessing that the cool front that moved through over night had affected the fish, I started to fish the drop off and along the length of the shoal, and still no fish. With the help of technology (fish finder, sonar) I found that there were groups of fish suspended at 20 to 25 feed in 75 feet of water. I finally surmised that the fish holding at this level would be very hard to get to, and when suspended like this they are usually not in a feeding mood.

The next problem was that to reach these fish with my jigs and no bottom structure to follow was near impossible, although down rigging or trolling would preset my bait at a better level, if they were not actively feeding it was again a tuff sell for these walleyes. What is needed in a situation like this is a slow presentation of the lure or live bait. What I needed was a bait delivery system that would consistently put me at the right depth and slow enough to keep the bait in the strike zone for a long time, so as to tease them into action. I also wanted to be able to make long casts to allow long drifts through these suspended walleye schools.

I decided to give a slip-bobber a try; it's simple and deadly when used right. Most anglers don't use this walleye technique enough it works. The slip bobber, slips up and down the line from your hook to a bobber stop you set for the desired depth. I needed to get the bait down 25 feet; with the slip bobber the stopper you use to set your depth is so small that it will pass through the rod guides and onto the reel without no problems at all. And if you find your depth is not quite right you simply move the stop up or down.

Now with the slip bobber controlling my depth accurately, I was able to drift my bait (live bait, jigs, and plastics work well) right through these schools of walleye at nose level, also able fish very slow giving these finicky walleyes lots of time to make up their minds about having a snack. It was a large school of walleyes and the result was a couple of hours of super walleye fishing.

If you think about it slip bobbers can be used with your favourite live bait for walleye fishing. Either a plain hook or jig tipped with a minnow, worm or leach can be fished in the same way for precise depth control. Plus slip bobbers are not restricted to walleye fishing. They are great for all sorts of fishing, when conditions call for depth control, long distance casting or a really slow presentation. I have used them for trout and salmon in rivers, and even on bass in small clear pools where a long cast and slow movement is needed. I have taken a lot of nice bass from under and alongside the numerous swimming rafts and docks around different lakes I have fished and used this method quite successfully. These tactics also work great around bridge pillars, piers and supports, and weed lines, and dams. By casting so easily and smoothly they are great for kids, they love to see the bobber twitch and disappear.

Once you start walleye fishing and any other species, you will likely find all sorts of situations where they will be the answer to speed and depth control. Pick up a couple and try these tips, you will not regret it. Just go fishing!

For those of you not familiar with the term, Bluetooth refers to a wireless protocol (or set of rules) designed for short range electronic applications (usually less than 30 feet in distance). Although the technology has been around for several years, Bluetooth support for PC users has been limited due to hardware manufacturers focusing on the more traditional 802.11 wireless network protocols (wifi). In reality, Bluetooth and wifi achieve different purposes and each has its pros and cons.

Cellular Telephone Bluetooth Headsets

The cellular telephone community has long embraced Bluetooth technology, developing and refining numerous wireless devices. One of the more popular Bluetooth applications for cellular telephones has been cordless headsets which enable users to leave their telephone in their bag or pocket while still being able to make and receive calls. Bluetooth headsets are generally very lightweight, worn over one ear and achieve talk times from 1-4 hours before needing a recharge.

Bluetooth PC Headset?

So if cellular telephone users have warmly embraced Bluetooth headsets, why not the PC community? At the time of writing, this author knows of no PC hardware manufacturer who has designed a Bluetooth Headset primarily for use with a PC. However, there is nothing to prevent a PC user from using a cellular phone Bluetooth Headset with their PC. Keep in mind though, these headsets were originally envisioned for cellular phone use and may need a bit of tweaking before theyll perform as well as corded headsets on your computer.

USB Bluetooth Adapter

Unless you own a relatively expensive notebook PC, odds are that your computer doesnt natively support the Bluetooth protocol. If this is the case, youll need an Adapter or Dongle in order to make your computer Bluetooth enabled. Bluetooth adapters are generally very small (a few inches long) and insert into a vacant USB port on your computer. When purchasing an adapter its critical that you buy one that supports the headset protocol. The headset protocol is merely a set of rules which enables your Bluetooth adapter to communicate with and make use of Bluetooth headsets in its vicinity. If your adapter does not support the headset protocol, no amount of tweaking will get your headset working with your PC. Adapters generally run between $20 - $80 USD and can be purchased at most PC retailers.

Buying a Bluetooth Headset

Bluetooth headsets for cellular phones are generally very expensive when compared with conventional corded PC headsets. Depending on where you buy your headset, you could spend anywhere from $20 to $200+ USD. If youre looking for a relatively inexpensive headset thatll simply enable you to make wireless VoIP calls using your PC, I recommend looking on Ebay. Although prices vary considerably on Ebay between merchants for similar products, overall they are considerably less expensive than purchasing the same headset from a telephone store. A word of caution about Ebay though; ensure that you read the fine print associated with shipping costs. Some Ebay merchants advertise Bluetooth Headsets for $5 USD however the real cost quickly rises to $35+ when you account for their often exorbitant shipping charges.

Pairing the Headset with your PC

Once your computer is Bluetooth enabled and youve obtained a Bluetooth headset, youll need to pair the headset with your computer in order to use it for VoIP applications. This is usually just a matter of setting your headset in discovery mode and allowing your PC to search or discover Bluetooth devices. The steps needed to enable discovery mode on your headset and adapter will vary between devices and should be clearly explained in the documentation accompanying your devices.

Adjusting your Audio Settings

Depending on your hardware and operating system, you may need to make adjustments to your audio settings after the headset is paired with your PC.
