Peritoneal Mesothelioma -- The Cancer Of Abdominal Lining

One of the fatal types of mesothelioma is Peritoneal Mesothelioma in which the cancerous cells attack the lining of the abdomen called Peritoneum. Peritoneum is the thin membrane, which shields various organs of the abdomen and also provides a lubricating fluid to enable the organs to move and work properly. Peritoneal Mesothelioma, which affects this lining, is yet now a relatively rare disease that accounts for about 1/5 of all mesotheliomas. Its only known cause in the U.S. till date is previous exposure to asbestos.

Major symptoms

Though Mesothelioma is neither age nor sex specific, peritoneal Mesothelioma is mostly seen in men who are in the age group of 50-70 years. There are a number of symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma most of which start appearing after 20, 30 or 50 years after the exposure to asbestos. These symptoms may include weight loss (however, waist line may increase), pain or swelling in the abdomen, weakness, loss of appetite, bowel obstruction, anemia, nausea and fever. Also, fluid often accumulates in the peritoneal space leading to a condition called Ascites.

Diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma

The initial step towards detection of peritoneal mesothelioma includes X-rays and CT scans. For confirmed diagnosis, however the doctor needs to do biopsy whereby a piece of tissue is cut from the affected part of the victims body and is placed under microscope for examination. If the disease is detected at an early stage it stands better chance of getting cured than the state of diffuse peritoneal mesothelioma, where the cancer has already spread to various parts.

The cure

Its true that peritoneal mesothelioma is fatal and leads to several deaths every year. However, with continued researches, several modes of treatments have been embarked upon and in the future there is a fair chance of the disease becoming absolutely curable. The types of treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

In surgery a part of the abdominal tissue is cut out to remove the tumor. At times the doctor may also need to remove a lung or a portion of the diaphragm as per the requirement of the surgery. Radiation therapy, the second method, requires the application of high energy X-rays to shrink the tumor and kill the malignant cells. The rays may be applied from an external machine or by placing the radiation source directly to the affected part of the body, by means of plastic tubes. Last treatment type is the chemotherapy whereby a combination of drugs is applied to kill the cancer cells. The drugs may be administered by mouth in the capsule form or may be applied intravenously via needle.

However, it is essential to mention that cost of treating any form of cancer is extravagant and you may consult a mesothelioma lawyer to earn you a handsome compensation from the authority who was responsible for your prior exposure to asbestos.

So learn more about peritoneal mesothelioma so that you can initiate the treatment at the very early stage and get cured.

Lego - A History Of These Building Blocks Of Imagination

Lego bricks. Creativity. Childhood. They go together like Mickey Mouse and Disney, wizards and Harry Potter. Lego has been a part of childhood for more than three generations. Nearly everyone under 50 has played with these building blocks of imagination. There is no telling how many engineers and scientists were spawned by these plastic building blocks.

Lego is synonymous with plastic toy bricks that can be easily transformed into buildings, space ships, cars, boats, trains and a myriad of other toys. The key is that the child gets to assemble the toy from the basic building blocks. Each toy can be assembled, disassembled and reassembled in enough new shapes and forms to tickle the imagination and stretch the youngsters creativity.

Today, Lego is much more that the simple blocks invented in 1949. It is toys, theme parks, movies, and CDs. Lego building blocks and other products are distributed around the world. These tiny plastic bricks and the company they have built, are a phenomenon with a success as remarkable as Mickey Mouse.

Lego Bricks Become The Building Blocks Of Fantasy

Where did Lego come from and how did it get to be such an important tool for childhood creativity?

Our story begins in Billund, Denmark. It is 1932. Master carpenter and joiner Ole Kirk Kristiansen opened a new business. His little company makes stepladders, ironing boards and wooden toys. He has just six employees. Nobody could have imagined, but Lego and the little building blocks of imagination had just been born.

Two years later, Kristiansen adopted the name Lego as a brand name for his toys. The name is derived from the Danish words "leg godt," which mean "play well." Ironically, he later discovered that Lego in Latin means "I put together. Lego has truly come to mean "put together" and "play well" in virtually every language. At this time, all of the companys toys were being made from wood.

In 1942, the Lego factory burned to the ground. Kristiansen rebuilt.

In 1947, the Lego Company became the first company in Denmark to buy an injection-molding machine. It began making plastic toy dolls and other toys. The famous bricks were yet to be invented.

It was not until 1949 that the Lego company introduced the Automatic Binding Brick, a little plastic brick, some with four studs and some with eight. At this time, the company was producing about 200 different plastic toys. The Automatic Binding Brick was sold exclusively in Denmark.

By 1950, plastic toys became half of the companys business. Ole Kirks son, Godtfred Kirk, who had worked in the company since age 12, was appointed junior vice president at age 30.

In 1954, Godtfred Kirk made a trip to England to meet with a purchasing agent. The purchasing agent told Kristiansen that he thought the Automatic Binding Bricks lacked an idea and system. Godtfred returned to Denmark. The Lego System was developed. The following year, Godtfred introduced the Lego System at a toy fair in Germany. It was the first time it was introduced outside of Denmark. The results were disappointing. Kristiansen did not give up. Later that year, the Lego System Play was developed. It was an improved system for the Lego bricks. The Lego System Play was exported to Sweden, where it sold well.

In 1959, Lego bricks and the Lego System were introduced in Great Britain, France, and Belgium.

It wasnt until 1961 that Lego bricks were first marketed in the U.S. and Canada. They were an immediate hit and distribution around the world continued. By the end of that decade, 843 people in Billund worked for the Lego company. The first Legoland film was produced. In 1969, the DUPLO system for children under age five was introduced.

By 1970, there were almost 1,000 employees at the plant in Billund.

In 1980, the Educational Products Department was established. The DUPLO Rabbit logo was introduced and a survey showed that 70 percent of all Western European families with children under age 14 had Lego in their home.

As 1990 unfolded, the Lego Group had become one of the worlds 10 largest toy manufacturers and the only toy company of that size in Europe. The others were in Japan and the U.S. More than one million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park and Godtfred Kirk Kristiansen celebrated his 70th birthday. Lego Publishing was renamed Lego Licensing and the LEGOLAND Band issued an LP.

With the beginning of the new century, LEGO continues to grow. It has also continued to remain a family owned company. These days, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the grandson of Ole Kirk, runs the company.

In 2003, a record 1.63 million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park in Billund. The Lego mini-figure celebrated its 25th birthday and the BIONICLE film Mask of Light was released to great success. Representations of the Lego mini-figures Biff Starling and Sandy Moondust are the first earthlings to reach the planet Mars onboard the NASA Mars rovers "Spirit" and "Opportunity." The Lego Education Center in Shanghai opened. The concept was aimed at children from age three to age twelve. There are more than 80 Lego Education Centers in Korea alone. www.lego.com receives around four million visitors per month.

Lego bricks are more than just building blocks. They are learning toys. They build on favorite themes and childrens stories and allow the child to exercise his or her own imagination and creativity. Offshoots of the basic brick include such toys as Lego Robotics, Star Wars Lego, Harry Potter Legos and many other building toys and kids' games. It is truly amazing what a few bricks and a full measure of imagination will produce.

Sunglasses

As many individuals find direct sunlight too bright and uncomfortable on the eyes, sunglasses are a wonderful visual aid to prevent blinding light from reaching the eyes. Sunglasses work best in outdoor activities, such as flying, riding, skiing and motorcycling. Doctors recommend to wear sunglasses whenever outside to protect our eyes from ultraviolet radiation. This can lead to the serious development of cataract. As a desire to mask their identity, celebrities and film stars wear sunglasses. They can also wear them due to the production lighting being more forceful than natural light. Sunglassesnamely on the beachhave been a popular fashion statement since the 1950s.

The color of the lens can actually vary by fashion, purpose and style. Green, yellow, brown or gray is recommended for general use to avoid or limit color distortion. This could be dangerous when driving an automobile. Gray lenses on sunglasses are considered neutral due to the fact they dont augment contrast or even distort colors. Green and brown lenses cause quite a limited color distortion, but have properties which are contrast-enhancing properties. The red lenses are good for medium and lower light conditions. This is due to the fact that they are good at enhancing contrast, but creates color distortion. Yellow lenses have the best contrast enhancement for depth perception. However, they do cause color distortion. Sunglasses with yellow lenses are usually used by avid golfers and shooters for the contrast enhancement, as well as depth perception properties. Other colors, such as purple and blue, offer no true benefitsthey are chiefly cosmetic. Some sunglasses with the interchangeable lens have clear lenses as an option to protect eyes during low light or nocturnal activities. Blue blocking or tinted lenses of amber are a result of heated debates in regards to the protective effect.

A few top-of-the-line model sunglasseslike Costa Del marhave polarized lenses to diminish glare created by light reflected from polarizing surfaces, such as water and polarized skylight. This is normally useful when fishingthe ability to see under the surface of water is impertinent. Some sunglasses use a gradation where the top of lenses is darker, as the bottom is transparent. Sometimes, a mirrored coating is applied to the lens. The mirrored coating reflects some of the light when it hits the lens of the sunglasses before its transmitted through the lens. This makes the situation useful in very bright conditions. The mirrored coatings can be manufactured in any color for fashion and styling purposes.

Frames on sunglasses can be made to hold the lenses in assorted ways. There are a few common styles: full frame to go all around; half frame to go around only half the lens; and frameless, where the ear stems are attached to the lenses directly.

Josie Lee has many different types of her sunglasses. Her newest pair are polarized sunglasses. For more information on what they are visit www.mysunglasses.info.

Painting Like a Pro - Basic Tips for Professional Results

One of the best home improvement projects for updating the look of your home is a fresh paint job. You can achieve the look of a professionally painted room with these easy, basic tips.

Lets start with the tools you will need. I suggest that you buy good quality tools and supplies, (brushes, rollers, paint, etc). Its not necessary to buy the highest priced tools and supplies, but good quality tools and paint will allow you to achieve a professional look. And, if you take care of your tools by washing and drying them after each use, you will be able to use them for years.

A list of supplies and tools you will need includes:
Paint
Primer (optional - see below)
Paint Brushes (suggest 1 wide - 3 inch and 1 narrow - 1 inch for "cut in" and trim)
Paint Roller
Roller Covers
Extension Pole (for ceilings and high walls)
Paint Tray (metal is best)
Caulk (to repair seams, fill in spaces)
Caulk Gun
Painters Putty (to repair holes, scratches)
Putty Knife (2 inch, 4 inch, or 6 inch, depending on size of holes)
Sander (to smooth walls after patching with putty)
Sandpaper
Plastic or drop cloths to cover furniture and floors

When shopping for a paint roller and extension pole, look for comfortable grips, and a roller and extension pole that are not too heavy. This will allow you to roll the paint on the wall using smooth strokes without struggling. You will be rolling the paint with a "push-press" motion that may be difficult with a heavy roller or extension pole. If you're not comfortable with selecting your tools, ask an experienced salesperson to make suggestions for you. Describe your project, and your salesperson can recommend brands for you to choose from.

When buying paint, a great way to get a rich, professional look is to choose a color that complements some decorating aspect of the room. As a suggestion, pick a color from a piece of furniture and select paint in that shade for the walls. You may want to pick a slightly lighter shade than the color you are matching. This creates a soothing background look that decorators and home improvement consultants often suggest. Also, purchase paint for your trim if you are using a different color for the trim than on walls. Again, I suggest buying high quality paint. Better paints will roll on with a beautiful finish, without streaking, and you will not have to apply as many coats for complete coverage.

Depending on the paint finish you want, select:
High or Semi Gloss, (shiny - great for bathrooms, and wall areas you would like to be able to wash)
Eggshell (my favorite - a very slight gloss that dries with the beautiful texture of an eggshell)
Satin (a slight gloss finish between semi gloss and flat)
Flat - no shine or gloss.

A note on primer: If you are painting walls with a lighter color than is currently on the walls you will need primer. Primer serves two purposes, it covers and neutralizes the darker color you are painting over, and it serves as an adhesive for the paint, allowing it to be applied evenly for a smooth finish.

Step 1: To get ready to paint, prepare your walls by patching holes, scratches, and minor wall separations with putty or caulk gun. Allow caulk or putty to dry. Gently sand for a smooth surface.

Step 2: Remove light switch and outlet covers, and apply masking tape to wall mirrors, (example: bathroom wall mirrors).

Step 3: Cover furniture with plastic or drop cloths. As an alternative to covering the entire floor with drop cloths, you can spread the drop cloths on the floor for protection where you are painting, and move them around as you paint the room.

Step 4: Now you are ready to paint. Its best to "cut in" walls first by using your brush to apply paint from the top edge of the wall next to the ceiling using horizontal brush strokes down to about 6 inches away from the ceiling. You are creating an area that you will roll up to with your roller. I like to "cut in" 2 walls at a time then fill in by rolling on paint. Start rolling at the bottom of the cut in area with even up and down strokes, and blend into the cut in area for a seamless appearance. Watch for drips and remove them with a damp cloth, or work paint drips in with your roller right away. Roll walls with even pressure. The correct motion is push-press, for smooth, even, paint application. Again, check for drips, and work them in or remove them with a damp cloth.

Step 5: After painting walls, apply paint to molding and trim with your brush. Apply a light, even coat with horizontal strokes.

Now you're finished. You can admire your freshly painted room that looks great, with the appearance of a professional paint job!

Can We Replace Human Thinking with Artificial Intelligent Robots?

Running or Participating an Online Think Tank will certainly make you think and you just never know where your mind will take you or who in the future might want to take your mind away from you! And so the question was proposed; Can We Replace Human Thinking with Artificial Intelligent Robots? Do we dare to think there? Well someone better and indeed the Online Think Tank was called to duty.

The Founder of The Human Knowledge MindMap stated that his plan would allow critical thinking skills for anyone who truly wanted to learn how to use it. He stated that he did not believe you can replace human thinking

I understand you believe that you cannot replace human thinking. I agree. But if only 2% of the people think and a maximum roll-out world wide of your MindMap only increases that by lets say 1000% that still leaves some 80% of the humans not thinking right? So, in Isaac Asimov's books he talks about different Worlds and Planets with different numbers of robots, on Earth none are allowed and there is a quasi police state with everyone living in domes. Seems rather "Logan Run" ish? And I already see this trend.

Now then if we look at The Human Knowledge MindMap;

http://www3.sympatico.ca/cypher2/WebMindMapBook.pdf

We see on page seven how simple the process of thinking truly is, thus it seems to be easier to get people to think than to build a robotic AI Android who will be able to surpass human intelligence. Using The Human Knowledge MindMap, well maybe it can be done. But you read the book and plan and you decide for yourself. Can you compete in the future with AI machines or will they surpass you in all areas of knowledge? Perhaps you will allow this article to propel thought in 2007?
