Congratulations! You have decided to become a free agent -- also known as an independent professional and a freelancer. Depending upon how you plan to handle your freelance lifestyle, you will need to establish how, where, when and with whom you will work.

Make a plan and set some long and short-term goals. Determine what you want to do, who you want for clients, what contacts have you already established, what do you need to learn, and what are the initial steps you need to take to get set up? I suggest that you read the following emerging free agent credo that I found in Daniel Pinks book Free Agent Nation: How Americas New Independent Workers Are Transforming the Way We Live: The act of work itself should produce its own intrinsic rewards. You might as well enjoy what you do. Produce quality work thats a genuine reflection of who you are. Use your freedom to accept responsibility for your work. Decide for yourself what constitutes success. And if youre not having fun -- at least some of the time -- youre doing something wrong.

Decide where you will do the bulk of your work, and, if at home, set up an attractive, comfortable, and usable space.There are as many choices of the direction to take as there are free agents. Some work part-time at home and part-time at their clients office. Some work at the library, some in the park, or at a nearby coffeehouse. You may have an extra room or a space in the dining room, bedroom, or den. The important consideration here is to make your workspace as fresh and inviting as possible, so that you will look forward to being there. Add meaningful photos, books, plants, paintings, crafts, and anything else that delights you.

Purchase the necessary tools of your trade and set them up in an organized fashion. These will include a computer, supplies, phone with an answering service, fax, files, a back-saver chair, reference library, and any other time and space-saving devices you will need. Even though the initial purchasing and setting up will take time, the more efficiently you organize everything, the more smoothly your life and business will function.

I suggest those colorful plastic cases that come with handles and divider pockets. I have one for each large project and fill them with colored and labeled file folders that I slip in and out easily when needed. It makes filing easy and fun besides. Then, when I am meeting with the client, I can just carry the whole case with me, so that I have everything I need.

Another option is setting up a workspace with others. It is easy as a free agent to experience loneliness. One solution is to set up an office with other freelancers or small business people. Even though you still work on your own, you can share equipment, a receptionist, a conference room, and a small kitchen area. There are establishments and organizations that offer these facilities, but you may find renting a small space along with some others may be more cost effective.

Remember the sooner you get the initial setting up completed, the sooner you will get started on the important stuff -- your new and exciting career!

Never underestimate the power of words. Consider, for example, how a few innocent words can potentially derail a candidate's presidential aspirations.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney has 5 sons ranging in age from 26 to 37. Until recently, they have been employed as ad executives, sports marketers and real estate developers. They are now actively campaigning for their fathers election.

Asked about their military status at an Iowa rally on August 8, Romney said he respected their decision to avoid military service, pointing out that his sons were supporting the country by helping their father get elected.

Anti-war activist Rachel Griffiths, who asked the question, was a little disconcerted by the answer. Told that Romneys son Josh was supporting his country by riding all around Iowa in a Winnebago, trying to get his father elected, was not exactly what she expected to hear.

Romneys explanation is more than a little revealing of his character. In fact, it tells you exactly what he is. Yes, you can call him a flip-flopping, poll-driven, draft-dodging, Mormon millionaire elitist robot - or anything else.

His sons have a right to avoid this war. For any number of excellent reasons. And if I had sons of military age, I would advise them to avoid it too. What is truly unconscionable is Romneys ardent support of the war - and somehow equating his sons activities with the horrendous sacrifices made by our servicemen on active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Apparently it is acceptable for other kids to go to war - to return brain damaged or blind or without limbs or in a body bag - as long as your kids are safe.

But of course! Why didnt I think of it? His kids obviously deserve only the best. Yours? Cannon fodder! Peons. Serfs. How dare you even think to question the king of the hill?

Romney revealed who he was, and under that innocent Mormon facade, theres an opportunistic power-hungry, privileged elitist - no different from any of our demented rulers in the White House.

In a word, hes a Hypocrite. A person who professes beliefs and opinions that are not his own. A word derived from hypo - meaning small. Despite his incredible fortune, his slick talk and attractive demeanor, It would appear that Mr. Romney is a very small man.

Elect him, if you will, but dont expect any change from the disasters we face now. Weve had more than one hypocrite in the White House. Another shouldnt make that much difference.

Just try not to be completely deceived. When a warmonger advocates more war - for your kids, not his - who does he represent? Certainly not you. Its always the poor who pay the price - the poor who fight and suffer and die. Not people like the Romneys.

I think there should be a law that requires active duty military service for the sons and daughters of every elected official that votes for war. Might be a few less wars then.

Note: Its Sunday, August 12 as I write this. Mitt Romney has won the Iowa straw poll - as expected. How did this happen? Who knows. People are looking for a new leader, and Mr. Romney is an accomplished actor. Maybe we can chalk it up to a failed school system - and the deliberate dumbing-down of our citizens. Maybe its the press - our wonderful free press that manipulates every item of so-called news. Maybe its just a question of Iowans being unable to recognize the obvious.

More likely than not, its probably just a question of money. Mr. Romney wouldnt be the first politician to buy an election. Maybe hes wealthy enough to buy the Presidency. I wonder what it must feel like - to be able to buy anything you might want...

At any rate, winning a straw poll doesnt guarantee anything. Mr. Romney still has a few hurdles to cross - and one can only hope that the great unwashed out here in Sheepleland come to their senses in time.

I still believe that the turning point in Mr. Romneys career came with his fatal choice of words - excusing his sons lack of service, while supporting an illegal war that takes the lives of others not so fortunate.

In the unlikely event of a Romney Presidency, however, Im prepared. I have two documents in front of me, and I just have to choose which one to use. One tells me how to build a bomb shelter. The other is a travel brochure of Canada.

In this treatment, parts of the lungs, the pleura (the lining of the lung), the pericardium (lining of the heart) and the hemi-diaphragm, along with the tumor cells, are removed. It decreases the progression of Mesothelioma, while allowing a patient to breathe smoothly. It is usually conducted on patients with early stages of the cancer and when the tumor is in chest cavity. EPP is recommended for patients with good heart and lungs conditions, in order to endure the severities of the post-operative term. Though the surgery combined with chemotherapy and radiation gives promising results, it does not guarantee a cure. Researches have shown that patients treated with extrapleural pneumonectomy and therapies have a medium life span of 35 months after the surgery, compared to only 9 months of pleurectomy. Still, some doctors question the surgery for its high risks, which include internal bleeding, blood clotting, pneumonia, amassing of pus, respiratory failure and even death. Thus, many surgeons recommend the idea of pleurectomy instead of the technically complicated EPP.

Thoracentesis:
A minor surgery is often conducted on patients who cannot undergo EPP or pleurectomy, called thoracentesis. In thoracentesis, a thoracic surgeon inserts a needle into a patient's chest to remove the excessive fluid built up in the lining of the lungs (pleura). This method neither cures nor decreases the cancer, but rather alleviate the painful symptoms of Mesothelioma. In some cases, talc or other agents are infused into a patient's chests to scar the chest wall and help them breathe properly without letting the tumor to increase, to some extent.

Paracentesis:
Paracentesis is a similar method of using a needle to extract fluid, but from the abdominal section of the body. It follows the same procedure of extracting fluid from the lining of the stomach or other abdominal organs. Patients with peritoneal Mesothelioma can benefit from paracentesis surgery.

The exam is considered to be quite difficult, and many do not pass all four sections at one time. Partial credit is usually awarded as long as the candidate passes at least two sections.

As with any career, an interest in the subject matter is helpful. Someone who hates math should probably not consider an accounting career just as someone who hates English should steer clear of copywriting.
