If there was a food or drink with an ingredient linked to obesity, blindness, seizures, insanity, headaches, cancer and neurological problems, its safe to say that the item wouldnt be very popular. In all likelihood, it would be banned from store shelves. But believe it or not, this ingredient is not banned. In fact, the ingredient is found in the number one selling item on grocery store shelves today: soft drinks.

The culprit is aspartame, an artificial sweetener thats found in nearly every diet soft drink. In 1981, the Food and Drug Administration approved aspartame to be safe for consumption, after 16 years of rejecting its approval due to a number of tests on animals that showed a linkage to brain tumors.

Since then, the FDA has reported 92 different symptoms linked to aspartame poisoning with death and cardiovascular problems being among them. And if this wasnt evidence enough that the FDAs approval of the drug was misguidedto say the least80 percent of consumer complaints the FDA receives each year is in regards to adverse reactions caused by aspartame.

How it was that the FDA allowed aspartame to be used in the 7,000 foods, drinks and medications on the market today is puzzling, if not infuriating. But thanks to the consumer rights advocacy group Mission Possible and their poring over stacks of documents, its now much clearer.

According to their research, G.D. Searle and Co., made several attempts to convince the FDA to approve aspartame, despite test after test that showed rats with high amounts of aspartame in their system formed brain tumors. This finding, of course, is why the FDA refused to allow aspartame up until 1980. But by 1981, a shake-up in the FDA was put into motion. The previous commissioners authority was suspended and a new man stepped in to head the FDA. The very same year, aspartame was approved and the once financially struggling Searle Co. started making significant profits. In other words, political clout trumped health concerns.

Today, Mission Possible is filing a product liability lawsuit in New York and New Jersey due to several of the states residents claims that their brain tumors are linked to aspartame consumption.

Litigation is the only way to spare consumers the misery of aspartame poisoning, said Betty Martini, founder of Mission Possible International.

Recent findings by The Cancer Research Center of the European Foundation of Oncology and Environmental Studies in Bologna, Italy on aspartames linkage to leukemia and lymphoma in female rats will be presented at an international scientific conference in September.

Russell Blaylock, a leading authority on aspartame and neurotoxicity had this to say about the study:

The new study releasedshould terrify mothers and all those consuming aspartame sweetened products. This was a carefully done study which clearly demonstrated a statistically significant increase in several types of lymphomas and leukemias in rats. Both of these malignancies have increased significantly in this country since the widespread use of aspartame.

Folks, so much for the FDA's interest in the safety of the consumer. I highly recommend that you avoid aspartame at all costs and replace ALL beverages containing this toxic substance with pure water.

There can hardly be a driver in America who hasn't been cruising down the highway when the regular programming on the radio is interrupted for a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. A brief warning that a test is about to occur is followed by a burst of tones that sounds like it's coming from a dial-up computer modem followed by a reminder that what was just aired was a test.

Or, perhaps you live a tornado-prone section of the country like I do. If so, we probably share this similar experience. Absorbed in the work at hand, you hear a whine in the distance that at first startles you and then makes you look at a clock and a calendar to confirm it's 11 a.m. on the first Tuesday of the month --the time local government authorities test the city's emergency warning sirens. If it isn't, you know your next step is to grab a portable radio and flashlight and head for the basement.

I'm not sure exactly when this loose network of government officials, broadcasters and local sirens coalesced into an organized system for alerting the public of an impending emergency - although it probably was the same time the USA entered into a protracted Cold War with the Soviet Union. However, I am certain the original planners of the system did not envision the existence of thousands of private TV channels and digital signage networks.

Yet, that's exactly where technology has taken us today. The existence of these networks gives corporations, universities, colleges, secondary and even primary educators, government agencies, the military and other institutions the opportunity to inform people within the reach of their private TV and digital signage networks of an unfolding emergency situation.

I would argue that in some situations the ability of these networks to deliver highly targeted messaging to a select audience makes them even more valuable than a blaring siren or even a broadcaster. It's a sad fact of life that we live in a time when a lone person or a small group can perpetrate an act of evil so deplorable that tens, hundreds or even thousands of innocent people can come face to face with peril and possibly death. In those situations, knowing where to go and what to do can mean the difference between life and death.

In a school, at an airport, in a post office, at a shopping mall, around the campus of a large corporation or even the confines of a small business, a digital signage network or private TV network can be used as a closed-circuit Emergency Alert System. "Terror Alert: Evacuate Terminal A," "Emergency: Gunman in North Wing of Building," or "Warning: Fire On Third Floor -Use West Stairway to Evacuate." These are all vital, yet simple messages that these networks of flat panels and TVs can display to stack the odds in favor of saving lives.

Additionally, with the right software, hardware and interface, the media servers used to schedule and playback digital signage networks and private TV channels can be tied directly into the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to playback warnings of larger dangers, like tornados, flash floods and civil emergencies.

In the next couple of columns, I will lay out some of the technical details of setting up a digital signage network or private TV channel to support the EAS system. (Don't worry. You won't need to be an engineer or computer programmer to understand what's required and how to employ it.) I'll also offer a few tips you might find valuable in preparing for emergencies.

Although it may be impossible to accurately state when and where the game of soccer originated, history has shown us glimpses of a game similar to our present day version being played for over 3000 years.

Around the 2nd or 3rd Century BC, it was documented that the Chinese military during the Han Dynasty played a game involving kicking a ball into a small net.

A game similar to soccer was played by the ancient Greeks and Romans but their game could include up to 27 players on a side compared to the modern day game of 11 players to a side.

Soccer became one of the most popular sports of the masses due to its popularity as a war game. A game of "football" which the British called it, was played in the east of England during the 8th Century where the head of a defeated Danish Prince was used as the ball.

During medieval times, villages and towns were pitted against each other in game battles that could take all day. There were no structured rules to abide by and kicking, biting, gouging and punching turned the game into a virtual battle of survival. These matches became so violent that the English authorities made many attempts to have soccer banned.

King Edward III from England passed laws in 1331 to abolish the game and Queen Elizabeth I had a law passed that provided a one week jail sentence for anyone caught playing soccer.

Despite these efforts, the game of soccer became so popular in England over the next few centuries that it evolved as the most popular sport of its time.

At this point, the only shortcoming of the sport was its lack of rules or standards. In 1815, Eton College, a famous English school, established a set of rules to be implemented by other schools, colleges and universities.

A standardized version of these rules were later adopted in 1848 by most of England's colleges and universities that were known as the Cambridge Rules.

Unfortunately, at this point, there were still two different sets of rules being used. Some colleges favored the Rugby Rules which allowed carrying the ball with your hands, tripping and kicking to the shins. which were contrary to the Cambridge Rules.

In 1863, The Football Association was created by eleven English soccer clubs and schools to establish a single set of rules to be enforced when they played against each other.

The supporters of the Rugby School rules objected to the changes and the two groups split apart. The Football Association later changed the rules in 1869 where they forbade the use of hands, except by the goalie, which led us to the game of soccer as we know it today.

The English still called it a game of "football" because the ball was played primarily with the feet but in the late 18th Century, the word, "soccer", was first used by a student of Oxford University by the name of Charles Wreford Brown. The students at Oxford were known for using slang where they added "er" to the end of words that they intentionally shortened. The game of Rugby was called "rugger". Brown shortened the word "association" and added "er" and the term "soccer" was born.

Since the 19th Century the game has evolved to where it is today. It is the World's Game that is played by more people than any other sport and is universally recognized as the most popular game in sports history.

Wow! The thought of helping Cyber Criminals is kind of sickening but many do it everyday without even knowing it. Let's start by talking about what Cyber criminals do. Cyber criminals use the internet to attack companies using the power of the internet as well as spamming, identity theft, and extortion.

Perpetrators of these attacks typically - but not exclusively - target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers; a pair of DNS Backbone DDoS Attacks, on October 22, 2002 and February 6, 2007, targeted DNS root servers, in an apparent attempt to disable the Internet itself. The type that I see most is threatening companies by shutting their website business or services down with a DDOS (distributed denial of service attack). A distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) occurs when multiple compromised systems flood the bandwidth or resources of a targeted system, usually one or more web servers. The scary thing is most PC users have no idea their PC has been compromised and so do nothing to fix it. If all PC owners installed anti-virus software and a firewall, kept the software up to date and scanned their PCs once a week these criminals would have to find another way to do business and we would save millions of dollars each year.

One of the excuses I hear from people I talk to about why they do not secure their PCs is it costs too much. Well that excuse doesnt fly. There are several anti- virus companies that offer free versions of there products for home users. Customers to my site can find a list of these in the computer section or do an internet search but be careful there are fakes out there that will compromise you PC. So if you dont want to be part of the problem then protect your PC by installing an anti-virus and firewall program. Make sure you keep the software up to date as well as running regular scans. Last night I had a really restless night and today I feel really tired and lethargic. It's my own fault though. I did something I shouldn't and had a guilty conscience.

Now don't get all excited and think I'm going to reveal something really juicy or controversial. It's nothing like that.

You see my son has autism. He also has a huge collection of old videos which he rarely watches. They just take up space.

This weekend he went away for respite care and as he has just celebrated his 18th birthday I decided to get rid of some of the older ones which I considered inappropriate for his age.

Actually, I could have got rid of most of them using those criteria, but like most people with autism my son likes familiar things so the ones he's watched since a child are his favourites.

Anyway, whilst he was gone I placed some of them outside the door of a local charity shop feeling good that someone else might get enjoyment from them.

However, when I collected my son from his respite care yesterday afternoon he proudly produced two new videos. Apparently he'd found them in some charity shops.

My heart sank, not because he's brought home some more but because the two he'd just bought were different episodes of the videos I'd just given away. I realised he must have been collecting them.

My son doesn't really speak so I had no way of knowing but once the possibility hit me I knew I had to get them back.

I couldn't sleep. I tossed and turned and thought what a rotten mother I was until eventually I could stand it no longer. As dawn was breaking I left my son sleeping in the care of his elder brother and went to the shop to try and retrieve them.

I felt like some sort of thief and hoped no-one would see me but they'd gone!

I returned home dejected and my troubled mind kept me awake. If my son had been "normal" I would never have contemplated disposing of his possessions without asking his permission first.

I had to get them back and decided to go the charity shop as soon as it opened.

Fortunately, when I arrived first thing this morning and explained the situation they kindly returned the videos to me. The experience taught me a lesson though and hopefully tonight I will be able to sleep.

I had one sleepless night but many people aren't as fortunate. Their lack of sleep goes on for days.

Insomnia affects approximately 60 million people, usually more women than men and can drive some people to the brink of madness.

I have had many sleepless nights over the years. Until my autistic son was about eight I didn't get one single good night's sleep. I can remember how awful it made me feel and once I wrote off my car because I think I fell asleep at the wheel. Fortunately I'm here to tell the tale but there are numerous similar situations which have a different ending.

Sleep deprivation creates all sorts of problems, not least the ability to think straight.

However, it is not necessarily the quantity of sleep which affects people but rather the quality. To prove the point one man actually went without sleep for almost 19 days in 1980 but that's certainly not to be recommended. He got his name in the record books but I doubt that it did much for his overall health.

You see it is whilst we are asleep that our body restores itself. The blood nourishes and repairs our muscles and our immune system turns on. That's why people sleep so much when they are ill.

I didn't realise until recently that sleep is actually quite a complex process. It's not just a case of relaxing, closing your eyes and then waking up sometime later.

Infact there are five different stages of sleep using different brain waves. Some stages benefit you more than others, and during the course of the night you will go through these stages multiple times.

The first stage is when you sort of daydream. During the second stage you feel drowsy, but it is the third and fourth stages which benefit you most. That's when you are in what is known as Deep Sleep and accounts for almost 25% of the process.

The final stage which is known as REM (Rapid Eye Movement) also accounts for about 25% of the process and whilst no-one is absolutely sure why it happens, scientists believe it is when you absorb learning. It is, however, the stage during which you dream.

The realisation that there are different stages of sleep explains why sometimes you can wake up feeling refreshed and at other times you feel absolutely awful. Also, why you can only sometimes remember your dreams.

Insomnia is a horrible thing and there are even clinics set up to deal with the problem. You can take medication, listen to music, try relaxation techniques and self help routines. You can even buy Counting Sheep night attire but I never could understand how the vision of energetic ovines leaping over a gate could send people to sleep. It's just the wrong message.

On the other hand, two of the best things to help insomnia are exposure to natural sunlight and exercise, so bearing that in mind I am now off for a brisk walk in the lovely spring sunshine.

I would run but I'm tired!
