I think that an LDS scripture 1 might capture the interest of those who think that charity might indeed be one of the greatest forms of love and happiness:

And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Finding Love and Happiness Through Charity?: The Challenge of a Lifetime
When you read the scripture mentioned above, you certainly don't have to be a Christian to become somewhat befuddled by this conglomeration of words: Who can bear all things? Who can believe all things? Who can hope all things? Who can endure all things? If charity is indeed one of the greatest forms of love and this LDS scripture is a valid representation of charity, what could be a more difficult attribute to acquire than that of charity?

Can you find love and happiness when you suffer long?
If there is one thing that we can be sure of in this world, it is that we will all suffer. Whether physically or emotionally everyone will taste the sourness of life. It is also sure that suffering will end at some time or another. The one thing we can control when it comes to suffering is how we react to it with the power we have to react. According to the scripture mentioned above, charity suffer[s] long so is the most love-filled reactions to suffer long? I also find it interesting that the particular phrase suffereth long, is followed by, and is kind. Is that the secret then to true love and happiness? Suffering long and still managing to be kind?

My roommate Jen (name changed for obvious reasons) is an example to me of this particular love and happiness. She has is sensitive by nature and extremely kind and conscientious so imagine my surprise on finding that at a young age she has already been torn by the disillusion of disappointment and divorce. In fact, I could hardly believe that it was so. She still suffers from her memories (perhaps every day) but for some reason that perhaps only she understands, Jen is kind and sensitive to others' needs. Jen, coincidentally also seems to be one of the happiest (or at least one of the most content) people that I know. Where is the university for that kind of suffering-long and being kind? Where is the university for that kind of love and happiness?

Can you find love and happiness when you cease to envy?
In a world where everyone stands on the pedestals of inequality, it's hard to imagine NOT looking around and wishing that our pedastal was a bit higher, a bit wider, perhaps even a bit lower. It's easy to understand that the actual thought and emotion of envy is not productive. After all, being envious never shapes your pedestal as it needs to be shaped but it's hard not to want what others have. However, apparently the scripture once again proves to be one of the most complicated of challenges because if we are to gain the best kind of love and happiness apparently the choice to give up envy is required.

Goodness. Achieving love and happiness is not an easy task.

There are many other difficult aspects of the concept of charity as defined by the scripture mentioned above and perhaps they would bring about a greater amount of love and happiness.

These types of skills seem a bit mysterious however. After all, I certainly didn't learn them in conjunction with my geometry class. Or perhaps I did. Was it Virgil who said that love conquers all things?

School districts have expectations for substitute teachers. However, many times they fail to communicate those expectations. They assume new and inexperienced teachers know what to do.

Apply these 10 tips and you'll become a successful substitute teacher - one who is appreciated by both the school district and the students.

1. Be prepared to work - If you know you may have to leave home early the next morning, have your clothes ready. Dress professionally, you will command more respect than those who dress casually. Print directions off the Internet to the school where you have been assigned. If you substitute in elementary schools make sure you wear a watch and have a whistle for recess duty.

2. Be Prompt and Dependable - Always arrive ahead of schedule so you have plenty of time to familiarize yourself with lesson plans and instructions the classroom teacher has prepared for you.

3. Follow the Lesson Plan - Never change the teacher's lesson plan unless the teacher has failed to leave plans for the day. If you arrive in a classroom without lesson plans, call the office and ask for the teacher's emergency sub plan. If there isn't one available, ask the principal or buddy teacher what the students should be working on. It's always good to bring along an emergency writing exercise, such as "Let Me Tell You About Me" or " Let Me Tell You About my Favorite Pet." This will keep students busy while you make plans for the day.

4. Whenever Possible, Teach - If you're a licensed teacher and familiar with the subject area, then teach. If you are unfamiliar with the subject area, ask another teacher for help.

5. Be Friendly - Help your students feel comfortable with a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Greet students at the door as they arrive. Write your name on the board and introduce yourself.

6. Fulfill the Teacher's Responsibilities - You're expected to be the teacher on duty, whether that means outside recess, lunchroom supervision, or escorting students on a field trip.

7. Follow District Policies - Every classroom should have an emergency/evacuation plan posted. Familiarize yourself with the designated safe area and the lockdown procedure. Know how to handle a fire drill. Notify the principal, front office or nurse through the intercom system if there is a medical emergency in your classroom. Understand the district and school policy regarding phone and computer use. Never use district equipment for personal use.

8. Be Professional - Never discuss confidential information or behavioral problems with other parents or staff members. Speak with the principal if you have a concern about a particular student and leave a note for the teacher. Leave your views on religion, politics and education at home.

9. Leave a Note - At the end of the day, leave a note detailing the day's events and what you accomplished. Explain any problems or changes you needed to make in the teacher's lesson plans and why.

10. Maintain Records - Keep a record of who you substituted for, how long and when. If a payroll error is made you will have a record to refer to.

So now you have survived escrow, packed up your things and moved into your new home. But the buck does not stop there. Now you have bills to pay, furniture to buy, maybe some repairs to make and then there is the mortgage. You are starting to think, Hey, I paid $225,000 for this house. Where on Earth did that money go?

If you were to build a home instead, what would you have to do? Lets say you buy some raw land outside of California for $30,000. Before you can start building you need to deal with processing approvals, remove trees, level the ground, pave it and prepare for building. This will probably cost around $11,000. Next you have to get environmental assessment which will be around $750. Then lay water and sewer lines and maybe deal with sediment control another $5,700. After the lines are down, there is water-electrical hookup for around $1,250 plus tree preservation, planting and wetland preservation for another thousand. On top of that you have financing, bonding fees, escrow, and other costs totaling to $4,000.

Now you have to buy you building permit, sewer and water inspection, steel for foundation and maybe even impact fees. Together this will cost around $4,900. Before construction, you have already spent $57,600 just over 25.6% of the cost of your bought house.

Now you are ready to build. Construction expenses will be 54.8% of the total purchase price ($123,300). Nearly 10% of that money will go for excavation, backfilling and foundation; 6% for plumbing; 20% for framing, sheathing and trusses. Then there is tile and carpeting, cabinets and countertops, drywall, heating and air conditioning, and siding which together will take up 23.5% of your budget. Another 20% will include windows, exterior and interior doors, patio, stairs, roof shingles, gutters and downspouts, driveway, landscaping, trim materials, appliances, painting, electrical wiring, light fixtures, insulation and other costs you might encounter. The rest will go to overhead and general expenses, the builders profit (9% of the total purchase price), sales commission, marketing and financing.

Sounds like it is much easier to deal with your monthly mortgage payments for 15 to 30 years then have the headache and hassle of dealing with all the small costs and worries of building your own home.

There is a cat fight brewing between Direcway LLC, Starband and Wildblue Communications for the large number of people in the U.S. who can't get some type of broadband internet and are willing to pay $50 or more to get better speeds. The combatants are telling investors there are 20-30 million "potential users" out there in rural or underserved America...true, but the historical fact of the matter is that up to now, only 500,000 or so have been willing to pay as much as $50-$100 a month for the "so called" high speed services offered by Direcway, Starband and now Wildblue. What has changed to stir all the press and advertising hubub by the companies? The claim is that both the Wildblue ka band and new Direcway 7000 offerings will finally give consumers a more DSL/Cable-like internet experience...ie lower latency and higher upload speeds. They expect that tens of millions of rural Americans will flock to their doors to pay over $50 per month to be "connected". To a degree they are right. It has become virtually impossible to funcion as a business without broadband internet and it is more and more difficult as a consumer to do without it. Even retailers (who obviously target consumers) are building sites that are very difficult to navigate unless you have a fast connection to the net. Pictures chew up bandwidth.

More and more people have found it less expensive to buy over the net...after all, we are nearing $2.50 gas now and who knows where it will end up. Imagine the cost of going to a store in a rural area in a vehicle that is getting 12 mpg (pickup with a V8) with $2.50 gas? Quick math says it would run you about $16.00 for an 80 mile round trip.....do that three or four times a month and buying at home from your easy chair starts looking pretty good. And you have time left over to plow a few fields if you like. Pretty easy picture to get. The problem is that all too many rural Americans already figured that buying from home is a good thing...they just do it by the old reliable U.S. mail order system. No computer or internet required.

The marketing effort by the "combatants" needs to focus on how much better the experience will be over the net. Perhaps they can throw in some instructions on how to overcome the fear of computers and typing as well. This is what I beleive is hampering the efforts to reach rural America by satellite internet...fear of the potential user of new ways of doing things. This is a generational thing...younger rural folks are going to find the internet the only way to travel in the future, but by that time WiMax should cover most of rural America with cable/dsl-like pricing and satellite dishes might be used as birdbaths.

The point of this piece is to arm investors....don't make a long term bet on Wildblue or Direcway! They will provide a bridge to up to 1,000,000 or so underserved rural consumers and could make a splash over the next two years or so, but they will never reach the vaulted numbers they strive for within a timeframe to make a large impact or long term profits in the rural underserved marketplace.
